Odyssée | Contemporary Artists Diane Detalle and Billy Zane curated by Rachel D. Vancelette celebrate the 120th Anniversary of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat: Neptune Gallery: May 9th-19th.
MAY 2024: In the heart of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, a curated two-person exhibition brings together the distinctive artistic voices of contemporary artists Diane Detalle (France) and Billy Zane (United States) curated by Rachel D. Vancelette. The exhibition promises to be a captivating exploration of distinct styles and unique perspectives, converging to create a harmonious dialogue that pays homage to the cinematic and artistic history of the enchanting city of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. In the exhibition, the canvas transforms the Neptune Gallery into a dynamic realm for action painting, emphasizing the immersion of both artists' physical engagement with the canvas. This activation gives rise to a controlled yet seemingly chaotic environment of paintings that unfold as a voyage of exploration and discovery for the audience. By pushing the boundaries of creativity, both artists provide viewers with a portal to emotional realms and reflective contemplation through abstraction. Embracing the concepts of the unconscious“Odyssée” presents a two-person exhibition transporting viewers into a painting immersion.
"Odyssée" is an invitation to explore the depths of creativity and presents an investigation of the boundless possibilities that arise when artists embrace the untapped reservoirs of creativity. Set in the town of Saint Jean Cap de Ferrat, this exhibition harmonious convergences artists Billy Zane and Diane Detalle by presenting artworks that transcend the ordinary and venture into the extraordinary. Both artists investigate physical manifestation, painterly processes, and the meditative physical act of painting. By activating the space with insightful panel discussions, new paintings and interactive live events the Neptune Gallery will transform the senses. Saint Jean Cap de Ferrat remains rich in historical creativity with the likes of Winston Churchill, Jean Cocteau, Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Chagall to inspiring creatives such as Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Elizabeth Taylor, Charlie Chaplin, all have visited or lived in the area. The canvas of creativity will converge on the port of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat for the celebration of the 120th Anniversary of the city, with audiences congregating for such unique experiences on the historical port at the Neptune Gallery. "Odyssée” stands as a testament to the power of artistic expression to transcend boundaries and create a unified experience. Diane Detalle and Billy Zane, though distinct in their approaches, converge in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat to present an exhibition that not only celebrates the beauty of change within the realm of contemporary art but also pays homage to the city's rich artistic history. Visitors are invited to embark on a visual journey, navigating the vibrant dialogues and captivating narratives woven by these two remarkable artists against the backdrop Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat's enduring cultural legacy.
Diane Detalle's Abstraction: The exhibition opens with Diane Detalle's avant-garde approach, injecting a breath of fresh air into the space. Her mastery of painterly knife techniques on canvas flourishes among bold dripping techniques infusing vitality and harmony into her work on canvas, transforming each into a vivid portrayal of her inner world. Detalle's abstraction goes beyond conventional boundaries, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the profound connection she establishes between the emotive process and the creation of art. The canvases become portals of fantasy, expressing the human experience and imaginative realms through the act of painting, offering an intimate glimpse into Detalle's journey, where each stroke and drip tells a story of illuminated dreamscapes and raw, unfiltered color and illusion.
Billy Zane's Cinematic Surrealism: On the other end of the spectrum, artist Billy Zane's lens offers a cinematic surrealism that transports viewers into an otherworldly realm. Known for his accomplishments in film, Zane's visual storytelling transcends the screen and manifests on canvas. Through a diverse array of techniques, Zane explores the boundaries between reality and fantasy, creating a visual narrative that captivates and challenges the imagination. His artworks, created often on movie sets worldwide, delve into the landscapes that surround him, serving as a vehicle for creative expression. Often using expanses of flat canvas of the floor, the artist immerses himself in the process and seeks to invite viewers to a completive experience. Zane often works with a combination of textured and layered effects leading viewers to an immediate world of action painting. The artist often participating and premiering at the Cannes Film Festival will also be creating works that will be an on-site part of his process of a global studio practice. The artist has also kept an art closet in Cap-Ferrat’s famed Paloma Beach restaurant for many years and has produced paintings on the shore between the delightful food and beverage service they provided.
“As a curator, I aim to guide viewers through an immersive experience, where creativity takes center stage as a source of inspiration. The exhibition encourages contemplation and honors the historical celebration of the city of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat. The artists seeking profound connections with resonating themes of an internal voyage among the physical act of painting of today” notes Rachel Vancelette
Divergence in Style, Unity in Dialogue: While Detalle and Zane's artistic styles may seem divergent at first glance, a deeper exploration reveals a harmonious dialogue between the two, both in technique and a rich passion for paint on canvas. Both artists pay homage to the historical movements such as expressing their innermost emotions and ideas through abstract forms and gestural techniques. The movements are characterized by an emphasis on spontaneity, emotional intensity and the act itself as a form of self-expression. Detalle's vibrant abstractions and Zane's cinematic surrealism engage in a visual conversation that transcends the boundaries of traditional artistic categorizations. The juxtaposition of their works, carefully curated by Vancelette, sparks dynamic presentations within the exhibition space, offering viewers a rich and immersive experience that encourages contemplation and interpretation.
Situated in the picturesque Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, this exhibition gains an additional layer of significance. The city's rich cultural history and natural beauty provide an exquisite backdrop, enhancing the impact of Detalle and Zane's artworks. The momentum of the city, reminiscent of the revolutions in both cinema and the legends of artists aligns seamlessly with the dynamic qualities of the artists' creations, inviting visitors to savor the present moment and embrace the transformative potential inherent in each piece. Diane Detalle born in the region makes this exhibition a homecoming with the influences of her native country, while Billy Zane's global cinematic career leads one to the premiere destination for multiple creative pursuits.

ABOUT DIANE DETALLE | Diane grew up on the French Riviera and graduated in business management before moving to London and then New York, where she originally worked in the finance sector. Having lived and worked in several countries, it is no coincidence that her art reflects a genuine global richness and variety. Taking the leap from finance to the art world over 20 years ago, Diane translates her free, energetic and spontaneous spirit into her creations. Painting on the floor through a palette knife and often embracing dripping techniques, Diane Detalle's work is rich in vitality and honesty. Each of her paintings becomes an intimate portrayal of her state of mind, a true reflection of her psychology of the moment, and thus commits her body and soul to the canvas. Momentum and change are shown clearly in her artwork, the revolutions of a gyroscope above the linen, allowing the viewer to both maintain and change their viewing orientation. The artist originally from La Côte d’Azur cherishes the beauty and vibrant colors of the region in her creative practice. It is a meaningful homecoming to bring to show for the first time in France. ABOUT BILLY ZANE | Billy is an American artist most often associated with his celebrated work in cinema as an actor. However, the raw authenticity of his paintings, drawings and photography which have been exhibited in Los Angeles, London, Budapest, Milan, and Miami, has garnered him nearly as much recognition and critical praise. His abstract expressionist paintings are bold juxtapositions of kinetic application and elegantly balanced color combinations derived from both intentional and naturally occurring contradictory influences. He likes to inform the process through self-imposed restrictions. Limited time and resources promote controlled chaos and encourage "beautiful accidents," as he puts it. To achieve this, most of his paintings are created outdoors, under fleeting daylight, with mostly found and recycled materials in remote natural locations.
